Now That You're A Mother By Linda Ott
Now That You're A Mother is a series that started by honoring Mother’s Day, but so many amazing answers poured in that we’re continuing on. Today we have veteran mama (and grandma!), Linda Ott, sharing her thoughts on the past, present, and future of her experience with motherhood.
1. What do your kids call you?
My kids (ages 34 and 38) always call me "Mom"
2. What’s something that you said you’d never do again, that you get to do now?
Relax! It’s a joy raising kids but knowing that my kids are all grown up and taking care of their own families now… I can finally sigh a deep relaxing exhale and enjoy my life as a retiree with my husband and as ‘Mimi’ aka Grandma to four little girls.
3. Has your perspective of your own mom or parental figure changed?
I loved and didn't love my mom at different times in my life. Disliked her intensely when I was a teenager. Loved her more than the moon after I had children of my own. She had an unconditional, supportive and laughter-filled love for them.
4. What’s something your kids did when they were younger that you’ll never forget?
When my son was a toddler, we would only let him watch Sesame Street on PBS. At age 4, We thought it would be fun to take him to the movie theater that was showing a new movie that had just come out—“Sesame Street Follow That Bird". When the movie was over, he wouldn't leave - literally refusing to leave, stomping his feet and crying because he wanted more "Big Bird movie". Just goes to show - even back then, he was realizing his dream - he now works in the movie business in LA!
When our daughter was just 5. One night she was mad about something. can't quite remember what it was but she was MAD. She stood at the top of the stairs and screaming, "You are ruining my career" - "STOP RUINING MY CAREER" - where that came from.....to this day, we will never know. Cracked us all up!
5. What is one hope you have for your kid(s) in the future?
Health first. Then, to be successful, productive and kind.
6. It’s 20 years into the future - what are your kids doing right now?
Hopefully doing some traveling - perhaps even enjoying their own grandchildren!
