15 Fourth Trimester, Postpartum and Breastfeeding Essentials

I’m 3 weeks postpartum with my second daughter and somehow we are all surviving. There’s a sense of confidence you have as a parent that makes the newborn process less stressful the second time around. My husband and I know our strengths, how to support each other and our roles as parents.

I wanted to share with you a list of 15 essential fourth trimester and postpartum items I use nearly everyday. If you’re expecting, consider adding a few of these things on your baby registry!

15 Postpartum Essentials

Absorbent Postpartum/Period Underwear: If you’ve had a baby you know that the postpartum bleeding can feel like punishment for not having a period for 9 months. These absorbent underwear have helped to make especially these final lighter flow days more comfortable.

Frida Perineal Ice Maxi Pads: I loved these pads. They stayed cooler longer and were softer than the ones that the hospital gave me.

Magnesium: I took these throughout my pregnancy when headaches got bad and have kept taking them religiously during this fourth trimester to keep myself “regular” in the bathroom and headache free.

Cozy Robe: Robes, robes and more robes. I live in a collection of robes postpartum! Heres a great list of other robes to make your Chrissy Teigen robe collection come true.

Dermoplast Pain & Itch Spray: They gave me this at the hospital and I think I finished the whole can… super necessary.

Herbal Perineal Spray: I especially love the healing properties packed in this natural perineal spray. The witch hazel being most useful especially for hemorrhoids.

Witch Hazel Pads: I lined these along my pads/ice pads and it really helped to soothe and heal.

Sitz Bath with Epsom Salt: After I got the okay from my doc, I recently started taking baths with epsom salts to loosen tight muscles and special herbs designed to heal your warrior bits down there.

Bengkung Belly Bind: Ancient postpartum practices have been traditionally used to provide the postpartum body the support to assist the abdominal wall muscle retraction, improve posture, support loose ligaments, and support the torso while vital organs return to their pre- pregnancy size and position. Using a 14-17 foot muslin + cotton or natural fabric the abdomen is wrapped tightly in order to support your body's natural healing. Tnah Louise is a postpartum doula that is super versed in healing for all kinds of women, particularly after birth. This binding service expedited my uterus shrinking, supported my back while breastfeeding and made postpartum bleeding end much faster than after the birth of my first daughter.

Tiny Human Supply Co's Nipple Crack: This is my favorite nipple balm. It is so effective at softening and moisturizing I use it on my super dry lips too… so it’s now also my favorite lip balm :)

Lacti-Cups: A nurse who was 6 months postpartum told me about these awesome breastmilk cups. I used the medela shields in the past and these are similar except they also function to catch let down milk without any suction. It definitely helps to protect sore and cracked nipples while keeping you dry in those early days of breastfeeding.

Haakaa: Since I used the Haakaa while breastfeeding my first daughter, I’ve been a HUGE fan. I’m able to get anywhere from 2-4 oz from one breast while my baby feeds on the other side, saving me time, less bulky pumping equipment (which also means less cleaning… woop!) and helping me to build a serious stash of milk in my fridge and freezer.

Lansinoh Milk Bags: I like these simple milk bags because they’re reliable and inexpensive. I used these along with the medela brand. My only issue with these last time was figuring out how to organizer these bags in the freezer…

Milkies Freeze: Breast Milk Storage System: … and then I found this!!! it freezes these bags flat to save space and make for easy uniform storage.

Medela Racerback Nursing/Sleeping Bra: Literally the most comfortable bra ever. I have it in white and black (the white is on sale for $12) I absolutely wear this even post- postpartum.

Xoxo
