The Joy of Farmers Markets By Elaine Dizon

Farmers Market

Life with two young kids takes some getting used to in the early weeks of a newborn’s life.  Back when the minions were four and three-months, navigating what we could all do together took some thought.  One of our favorite activities was going to the Farmers Market.  When we take the time to plan for it, a few hours at the Farmers Market – especially one at a park, is a restful and surprisingly sensory rich experience.  Bringing something to sit on, a couple of toys, drinks, and coloring books kept us all happy while we listened to music.  Before we sat down, we would do one trek around the market to purchase what we wanted – Kettle Corn is a MUST – and then we settled in.

I loved these precious hours.  The people watching, listening to the live band, watching children play, and being together outside was a welcome break from indoor life.  Away from the television and other technologies meant we could truly connect through conversation and presence.  I also took great joy in watching what caught each child’s eye.  For my son, it was the sky, the trees, and the grass.  For my daughter, it was a color, a basket of fries, and insects.

Although they’ve gotten older, the Kettle Corn habit, stays the same.
