Talking To Kids About Pride Month
I LOVE June because it’s Pride month! There’s nothing more beautiful than celebrating life and the many brave trailblazers of LGBTQ+ his/herstory. I especially love Pride because I identify as queer/bisexual. This is a super meaningful time for me and brings back a lot of amazing memories of when I lived in “the village” in Toronto running around wild and free with my BFF’s and a big beautiful community. By the time I was 13, I knew I was not only interested in boys but girls too. I am now married to a man who stole my heart. One day I will sit with our two beautiful daughters and proudly tell them who I am. And I will make sure they know that no matter who they are or how they choose to identify, we will love them unconditionally — forever. I am excited for that day…
What Is Pride?
The White House shares this proclamation about Pride Month: “The uprising at the Stonewall Inn in June, 1969, sparked a liberation movement — a call to action that continues to inspire us to live up to our Nation’s promise of equality, liberty, and justice for all. Pride is a time to recall the trials the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ+) community has endured and to rejoice in the triumphs of trailblazing individuals who have bravely fought — and continue to fight — for full equality. Pride is both a jubilant communal celebration of visibility and a personal celebration of self-worth and dignity. This Pride Month, we recognize the valuable contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals across America, and we reaffirm our commitment to standing in solidarity with LGBTQ+ Americans in their ongoing struggle against discrimination and injustice.”
