Moms on the Move - Gemma Bishop and Amelia Phillips

Moms on the Move - Gemma Bishop and Amelia Phillips

Today we have Gemma Bishop and Amelia Phillips from Mothers Unleashed on MiLOWE MAG. If their names sound familiar, it's because they are the women behind the "Stories We Tell" series. Make sure to read through the amazing stories if you haven't already.

First, tell us your story! We’d love to hear little bit about yourself and your business.

We met in a Baby Boogie class in West Hollywood in May and discovered that although our little ones were born ten days apart, they had the same due date! We got to talking and realized we had similar feelings about the lack of maternal support. There is not enough value placed on hearing women’s stories, let alone hearing women's stories regarding pregnancy, labor, infertility, pregnancy loss, and everything else on the road to motherhood. Both of us are from creative backgrounds. We decided we wanted to hold an inclusive space for women to voice the experiences that make them mothers. And so, Mothers Unleashed was born. Mothers – because that’s whom we want to empower, and Unleashed – because, we ain’t sittin’ in the corner anymore! We want to hear fellow moms speak with brutal honesty, vulnerability, joy, sorrow and all the other colors of the rainbow. We hope the experience is a catharsis for the participants and a community builder for the audience. We want mothers to feel as if they're not alone. Though the details of each of our experiences are different, and it's important to give space to those unique experiences, it's in the emotions that we are connected.

How many kids do you have, what ages?

Gemma has a baby boy, Brooks, who just had his first birthday, and Amelia has a little girl, Lana, who will be one in just a few days!

What are your top three recommendations for things to do with kids in LA?

Pan Pacific park is great! They have two playgrounds to choose from and a pool that’s open in the summer, plus a huge grassy area to run around in.

LACMA is fantastic. Children under 18 join for free and can take one adult as their guest free as well. The Boone center has painting and kids activities, a story time hour, and the rest of the museum boasts nice cafés and plenty of outdoor space. They have free jazz concerts and the La Brea Tar pits are on the property as well. So there is plenty to see.

There are many markets happening on the weekends throughout LA. One of our favorites is the Melrose Trading Post, open on Sundays year round. And a lovely little farmers market is run on Melrose Place, open on Sundays too. Lots to see for both bub and Mom.

Kings Road Park is a small neighborhood space with a playground and shady area, and there are always other kids there for your baby to play with. We also lovs Drag Queen Story Hour at the West Hollywood Library and the craft fair at the Grove every third Sunday, hosted by Beverly Hills Public Library.

How do you network as a parent and a business person?

Gemma is a huge advocate for the West Hollywood library. They have fantastic story time for babies and toddlers and a staff who really seem to care about children’s content. Gemma met her wonderfully accidental ‘mothers group’ there and they have been a happy family ever since.

Amelia enjoys a co-working daycare center called Wiggle and Work in Silverlake. When she has pressing deadlines, she'll try to get over there. You pay by the hour (affordably so!), they provide daycare workers, and you get to work. They also have a Facebook group.

Where do you go for inspiration on the web and in real life?

This is an interesting question because sometimes being a Mom can drain the desire for inspiration out of you. It is super important to make sure to take time for ourselves as parents. Gemma finds inspiration in her friends and family more so than online. However, a good series will always pique her interest, and she loves to forage for bargains the old fashioned way, at vintage and secondhand stores.

Amelia is always on the lookout for inspirational historical figures that may have been overlooked. She often will read about random women from history and then go on a Google hunt, wondering if there's a story hiding there. When it comes to caring for Lana, Amelia tries to go easy on herself and stays away from things like Pinterest or Instagram, because they confuse inspiration with aspiration. It's too much pressure! If you get your kid dressed and they're happily playing, then the day was a success!

What is the first website you visit every morning?

Instagram and Facebook are staples in Gemma’s morning routine. Followed by a quick look at the news headlines.

Amelia is addicted to Facebook, sadly! Thankfully, her friends and family mostly share news articles from places like the New York Times and Washington Post and baby or dog photos, so at least she's getting a good dose of news and happiness! She also used to check Trump's Twitter feed every morning, but thankfully has found herself too busy to waste time with that!

What are you three favorite Instagram accounts to follow?

  • Gemma’s best friend is a mother of one and fierce burlesque performer from Australia @lyralabelle

  • And @travelingwomen_ Stunning photos of women traveling all over the globe.

  • And Amelia is addicted to knitting, so she only follows knitters. Don't judge!

  • (and MiLOWE kids, obviously!!!!!)

What is on your to do list for today?

What isn’t on the to do list?! Bugger it. I’m having a wine!  Oh wait, our kids just crapped.

And finally, where can we find you?
