How to Prep Your House Before You Travel
As I’ve mentioned on Insta this week, we’re getting ready to head out on some summer vacations so I thought I’d share my checklist of house tasks that I always check off before I travel. It’s important to come up with a plan for your house when you’re away and it’s easy to forget some tasks if you don’t travel often, or you’re just a little out of practice after a year at home. In my opinion it’s always nice to have someone either stay at your house if you’re traveling for a while or have trusted neighbors/friends look in on it for you.
Here are some important items to check off before you go:
Mail hold - It’s super easy to do a USPS hold and you can even sign up for informed delivery so you get a daily summary of the mail you received. You’re also able to change delivery date or address of UPS packages for a small fee.
Timers for lights - we use a mix of old school twist timers and various smart plugs.
Watering plan - make sure you have a plan for someone to water any houseplants or if that’s not possible, drop them off at your friends house.
Make sure you’re landscapers/exterminators/monthly service vendors have a way to get into your yard if necessary and you have a plan for locking up after them.
Give a few trusted neighbors keys to your house.
Make sure you alarm and/or security cameras are all set to go. There’s nothing worse than starting a trip and realizing one of your cameras lost WiFi or you can’t connect to your alarm console.
Clean the house! Seriously, nothing is worse than arriving back home to a dirty house. It’s always stressful trying to pack up and get everything cleaned but you will be so thankful you did when you return and don’t have a mess to worry about.
Is there anything else you make sure to do before you travel? Let us know!
