#1 Schedule/Routine

Scheduling will make or break your baby’s night time sleep. Focus on your baby’s daytime routine and follow their natural cues as well. There is a schedule or routine out there for every family. My favorite schedule is the EASY (eat, activity, sleep and your time) schedule. I find this schedule works best with most families because it can be adjusted based on your family and baby’s needs.

#2 Create the difference between day and night

Your baby’s daytime schedule will be all about interaction, feeding, play and of course good naps. Where as the night time schedule will be solely focused on sleep. It’s best to follow a consistent bedtime routine such as a bath, bedtime story with dim lights, and a nice good feed. I also suggest putting baby to bed drowsy but awake so they learn to put themselves to sleep without assistance and can self soothe if they wake between sleep cycles.

#3 Holy Grails — Blackout shades, swaddle and sound machine

Blackout shades and a nice sound machine will give your baby’s nursery a womb like feel. Baby’s also enjoy swaddling but you may think your baby does not because they fuss or will try and “break out” but babies like to be swaddled different ways. Some like both arms in and some like to have one or both arms out so they can touch their faces. I swaddle until baby is showing cues of rolling over.

*PS — A nice cool room will give your baby the most comfortable sleep. Keep your thermostat between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit.

I hope these tips are helpful. You can follow me on instagram @MitchellNewbornCare. I would love to hear any specific questions you may have for future post to help get you through the first few months of your new life!

xo, Julia
