Super Magical Kids Parties: Two of Our Favorite Birthday Themes

Super Magical Kids Parties: Two of Our Favorite Birthday Themes

12 Oaks is a female-run custom dessert studio, founded in 2010 in Manhattan, NY. From their new commercial kitchen in North Hollywood, sisters-in-law Katherine and Missy create unique and modern (not to mention delectable) cakes, cakepops, cheesecakes and more. Delivery or pickup is available in the LA area, and 12 Oaks’ cake pops ship nationwide.

Magical unicorns and awesome superheroes: Some things never go out of style. And it's much to our delight at 12 Oaks that these themes remain popular for kids of all ages. Whether your little one is into all things magical or is more interested in saving humanity, we’ve got you covered for your little one’s next birthday party. Here are some of our favorite ways to incorporate these popular themes into your child’s desserts and treats!

Creating A Magical Unicorn Birthday Party

Unicorn desserts make sweets both beautiful and magical and as you all know we love creating gorgeous treats. Plus, there are so many options for designing Unicorn desserts, from cake pops to cupcakes to multi-tiered cakes!

Our Unicorn cake pops are some of our favorites to design, they’re so fancy and adorable. They’re certainly a labor of love; not only do we roll a regular cake pop and dip it in candy melt, we up the ante by hand-painting the eyes and blushed cheeks and create the ears, flower crown and horn out of fondant (these molds are a big help!). We also like to hand paint the horn a sparkly gold to make these cake pops extra-special. Keep in mind that we can create these “stick up” as pictured above where you’d use a stand to help them stand upright, or “stick down” where the cake pop would rest on a plate or serving dish.

We recommend Unicorn cake pops as the perfect favor for children’s birthday parties or baby showers. You could even pair these with our Magic Wand cake pops for an especially magical event.  We often hear people commenting “but they’re too pretty to eat!” Our advice: don’t worry, you can have your cake and eat it too. First, take a selfie, then dig in, because they’re both pretty and pretty delicious. ;)

If you’re planning a party for older kids, we have a fun twist on this theme: our Zombie Unicorn Cake Pops. With a slightly green hued blush on their cheeks and a missing eye, our Zombie Unicorns are a favorite for those who might like to put a fun, spooky spin on the traditional unicorn theme.

We’ve had a few opportunities to create special cupcakes for unicorn-themed parties. We thought these came out super cute with the fondant horns and ears and fancy sprinkles around the bottom of the frosting.

We also had the chance to design a pull-apart unicorn “cupcake cake”. This is a custom dessert where cupcakes are placed side by side and then frosted together to create the design of the unicorn. (PS: I loved designing the mane for this pull apart cake to look like it was full of gorgeous flowers.) One special bonus with a pull-apart cake: instead of having to cut the cake, each adult or child can pull one cupcake away from the unicorn. This design definitely saves time and stress when all of the little ones at your party are vying for their slice of cake. Hand them a cupcake and send them off to enjoy!

Making A Superhero Birthday Party Superb!

Does your little one have a love for all things Superhero? At 12 Oaks Desserts we love a good Superhero themed party, there are so many options to make the desserts fun and unique. We’ve had the opportunity to create desserts for a few Superhero birthday parties in the past and these are some of our favorite designs.

Our Superhero cake pops were so much fun to design and make! Those pictured above were for a special client’s 8th birthday party. We chose to use each hero’s icon on their respective cake pops. Our favorite was making the Hulk’s fist -- it came out (as intended) a little rough and felt like the perfect embodiment of the Hulk in cake pop form. ;) We used fondant for the capes and details on the other cake pops, and chose color-coordinated straws for each hero. Did you notice the “T” on Superman? No, it wasn’t a mistake, we used the birthday boy’s first name instead!  We are big believers in the motto that it’s the little details that make the finished product feel just right. These make for an awesome party favor and can be individually wrapped for each guest to enjoy at their leisure.

We’ve had two opportunities to design and create Superhero birthday cakes. While fondant isn’t always our first choice, for both events’ cakes it was needed to create the looks that the clients had in mind. In the cake on the left, we used the fondant to create the ripped effect of the Hulk’s fist punching out of the cake. We enjoyed creating this top tier as it evoked a sense of action that you typically can’t capture when designing a cake. The two-tiers allowed us to incorporate a lot of different Superhero elements. The birthday boy’s favorites (as you can see) were Batman, Captain America, Thor and the Hulk.

Our second Superhero cake was for a special 5-year-old’s birthday celebration. They were in need of a cake to serve 30 guests and we landed on a square design to allow us to incorporate the birthday boy’s four favorite superhero characters: Iron Man, Batman, Spiderman and Superman. Again, fondant was a key tool in achieving the right look for this cake, in order to include the superheroes’ four signature colors in each corner. As an added bonus, the quadrant design was helpful for the parents so they could easily cut pieces from each child’s favorite superhero. At a child’s birthday party, any way to make the cake distribution go faster is a plus! We again added some black petal dust and black fondant detailing to create a more industrial and gritty look for the cake. We also used edible images for the logos to ensure they were perfect.

It’s so fun to plan around a theme that will delight your little one on their special day, but if you ask us, you can’t beat Unicorns and Superheroes!
