Kids Parties: Choosing the Perfect Cake Flavors
Kids Parties: Our Favorite Cake Flavors
Kids’ birthdays are always so fun to plan for (and you know we love a good theme to design our desserts around). Choosing the right cake flavor is an important part of the planning process and we’re here to help! Below are our top recommendations for kid party cake flavors and some additional tips and tricks to aid you in deciding on the perfect birthday party desserts for your little one.
Cake Flavor Tips For the Youngsters
Age is a very important factor when thinking about the cake flavor(s) for your party. When planning for the toddler birthday crowd, we’ve found that simpler is better. We all know a few toddlers (or many) who are picky eaters or those who might be turned off by strong flavors. We’ve found that most parents tend to go straight vanilla cake for the 4 and under parties. But we like to recommend slightly upping the ante with the cake and trying a funfetti or 12 Oaks’ chocolate chip flavor.
Our funfetti cake is our classic vanilla cake, but we’ve added some jazziness by baking the cake with high quality rainbow sprinkles to give it the quintessential confetti look. It’s both a visual and taste celebration in every bite! And we’ve found that toddlers tend to enjoy seeing the rainbow sprinkles in their cake. Another fun option we recommend is our rainbow cake, which is our classic vanilla cake infused with food coloring to create the rainbow look. For our chocolate chip cake, we include semisweet chocolate chips in the batter, which melt only slightly during baking and make for delicious morsels of chocolate throughout the cake. Both cake flavors are fun without being too adventurous for young taste buds.
Cake Flavor Tips For Older Kid Parties
For older kids with more refined palettes, we like to advise our clients to try either our red velvet cake or our mint chocolate chip cake. Red velvet tends to be our best-selling flavor across the board. Really, who doesn’t love lusciously moist cake with a rich cream cheese icing? We’ve found a lot of kids over the age of 6 go wild for the red velvet cake.
And somewhat surprisingly, a lot of kids enjoy the chocolate chip cake paired with our mint chip frosting. When served together, these two can be likened to a Thin Mint and they are simply delectable.
Bringing The Fun: Cake Accompaniments
If we’ve said it once, we’ve said it a hundred times: A sprinkle bomb is an excellent addition to any cake. We include a sprinkle bomb by removing a small bit of the center of the cake and filling that hole with candy and sprinkles. During the cutting of the cake the sprinkle bomb “explodes” and totally wow’s the kiddos. We like to customize the sprinkle bomb for the party, by color if that fits within the theme or by type of candy if the birthday boy or girl has a favorite. No matter what, a sprinkle bomb always feels like the moment you break open a pinata – so much fun!
Cake pop toppers are another fun way to add pizzazz to your cake. Our Adora-ball cake is one such example. We create the cake as we normally would, then add cake balls, cake bites or cake gems to the exterior of the cake. The cake balls or gems add a little extra treat for the kids to enjoy. We can even customize the bites in different flavors to add a little extra surprise to the cake.
All of this is to say that there are a lot of ways you can think outside of the box and customize the cake for your little one’s special day. And for the 12 Oaks team, it makes our day to hear from a parent that their child’s face lit up when they saw their cake.
From scratch with love,
