Everything I Read In September (With Reviews)

Somehow another month had passed since my last book review post and I made it through another good stack! Here is a roundup of all the books I read this month in case you’re looking for some literary inspiration.

Nice Girls - I just finished Nice Girls by Catherine Dang and I weirdly don’t have strong feelings one way or the other on this one. This book follows Mary, a college senior who is kicked out of school and forced to return to her hometown where an old nemesis has recently gone missing. I didn’t love this one but I still read it in two days. I felt like there were some plot points that were weaker than others (and I would have loved more of) but if you already have the book I’d still say read it. Let’s give this one a 3.5 stars.

The Whisper Man - I finally caught up with the rest of the world and read The Whisper Man about a widower and his son relocating to a town full of missing kids. I was thoroughly creeped out and highly recommend if you’re one of the handful of people that haven’t read yet and you’re looking for a spooky fall read.

Apples Never Fall - I really, really enjoyed this book. It made me think a lot which to me is a sign of a great story. This was a book about complicated family dynamics, how marriage can change over time, how complicated forgiveness and family expectations can be. And on top of that, there’s a missing persons case. Now imagine one of your parents is the main suspect and you have to dissect their relationship and figure out who you’re loyal to.

If you look up other reviews you’ll see a lot of people say things like “nothing happened” and “too long.” And I don’t totally disagree but I think those are surface level observations. It is a very long book (460 pages) and it is not a typical thriller/family drama. If you’re looking for action and excitement to binge in a night this isn’t the right book for you. It’s not fast-paced and is more what I call “a slice of life” type of book. We follow the characters throughout their time in the book living their lives which include the day-to-day monotony of normal life paired with the extraordinary elements of a missing persons case.

If you’re a fan of Jane Harper books, a Liane Moriarty fan or someone who loves an in-depth examination of a family, this book is for you. I think this one will stay with me for a long time.

The Night She Disappeared - I’m a huge fan of Lisa Jewell and this one did not disappoint! This book tells the story of a young mom who disappears and the woman who becomes fascinated by her case and determined to find her. I loved the different POVs and timelines in this book and it’s a great pick if you’re a thriller fan.

Verity - Really is there anything to say that hasn’t been said about this one yet? I finished this twisty thriller and thought WTF but in the best way possible. Most of the internet has already read this one but if you haven’t and you’re a fan of steamy physiological thrillers go read it now!

The Cousins - Three cousins who haven’t seen each other in years are summoned by their grandmother to work at her summer resort. Of course in the process they find out all of their family secrets. I listened to this one on audiobook which isn’t my favorite format but overall I enjoyed the book.

Happy reading!
