Everything I Read In August (With Reviews)
Anyone looking for a new book? Well I have some recs for you! August was a great reading month for me and I made it through nine books, many of which I really enjoyed. Here’s a recap of everything I read last month.
Top Picks:
My absolute favorite book last month was Razorblade Tears by S.A. Cosy. Razorblade Tears is the story of two ex-cons, Ike and Buddy Lee, who are brought together after their married sons are violently murdered. Ike and Buddy Lee have absolutely nothing in common, other than being less than stellar parents, but together they set off to find out what happened to their sons.
This book tackles so many heavy topics - homophobia, racism, classism, familial trauma and guilt - but it has so much heart you will instantly be transported into its world. I am so blown away by S.A. Cosby and think he is one of the most gifted writers I’ve ever read. I reread passages multiple times, told people to read the book before I finished and continually forced my husband to read particular amazing sentences.
The book is quite gritty (if you’re not a fan of reading violence, skip this one) but it’s so much deeper than the average thriller. Check this one out if you love thrillers and books that deal with heavy issues head on.
Another five start read was Not a Happy Family by Shari Lapena. It’s a super fast paced twisted family thriller that kept me guessing until the very end. People seem to be very split on this one but I loved it and read it in a day.
Four Star Reads:
For Your Own Good by Samantha Downing - One teacher of the year and lots of murder at the fanciest of private schools. I don’t always love unlikeable main characters but this one was a lot of fun, especially as someone who went to a small private school.
The Path to Sunshine Cove by RaeAnne Thayne - A woman reluctantly returns to her hometown and finds love. RaeAnne Thayne is the queen of wholesome romance. Basically a hallmark movie in book form.
The Sea Glass Cottage by RaeAnne Thayne - Basically the same plot as above but still wonderfully satisfying! If you’re looking for a sweet and predictable romance novel like this anything from her Haven Point series is also a safe bet.
3 Stars Reads:
Survive the Night by Riley Sager - Not my favorite Riley Sager but a fast and moderately enjoyable read about an unreliable narrator trapped in a car with a possible serial killer.
Not My Favorite Reads:
The Husbands - A take on Stepford Wives, all the men in this exclusive community are unusually perfect and helpful. It just didn’t work for me.
We Were Never Really Here - I was mildly obsessed with Andrea' Herd’s last book The Herd but didn’t enjoy this one. However, I have to note a lot of people loved this one and it was the Reese Witherspoon pick of the month.
Final Girls Support Group - I’m obsessed with the “Final Girls” concept and loved the idea of a final girls support group but it just fell flat for me (maybe because of my high expectations?). I found the action really confusing to follow and didn’t care about any of the characters.
Happy reading!
