Our Favorite Kid-Friendly Hikes in Northern Michigan

As I’m sure you know by now, Northern Michigan is one of my favorite spots in the entire world. I’m so lucky to have family up there because it gives me an excuse to visit multiples times a year and this year I was able to spend three full weeks there which gave us ample time to explore the limitless hiking options.

Here are a few of my very favorite hiking paths in the Traverse City/Northern Michigan area (in no particular order).

Boardman River Conservation Area

Boardman Conservation District - I just did this walk for the first time and was so impressed! Located in central Traverse City, you park right by the Nature Center and then hike along this short loop next to the Boardman River. You cross bridges, go through meadows, pass the cutest little “bear cub den” that my daughter was obsessed with, then loop around back up to the nature center. This is a perfect hike for little kids because it’s short, scenic and a loop with clearly marked signs.

Seven Bridges - This is another favorite hike up north that I make sure to do on every visit. As the name would imply, you cross several bridges (4 to be exact, not 7) on this hike up in Rapid City. The trail and boardwalk leads through cedar trees, over the river and to a meadow where you can loop around. This is a great place for exploring and is especially beautiful this year with the water so high this year.

Maple Bay - Maple Bay Natural Area is off the 31 highway between Traverse City and Elk Rapids. You would probably recognize the area from one of my many sunflower photos. Follow the gravel road down to the parking lot and take the short trail down to the beach or follow along the two miles of paths.

Maplehurst Natural Area - This beautiful property on Torch Lake is great for a short stroll down to the water. There is plenty of space for little ones to run and tons of plants and trees to investigate.

Grass River Natural Area - We discovered this area on our last day in town and we were so bummed we didn’t get to explore it more. Start at the nature center and pick up all of their guides (trails, flowers and birds that you’ll see). There are dozens of clearly marked trails in all different types of landscapes. Highly recommend this one!

Happy hiking!
