My Review of Wheeler Gorge in Ojai and How to Research Campsites
In October my family took our Meerkat trailer out for the first time to Wheeler Gorge in Ojai. This was the perfect first outing and I can’t recommend the campground highly enough! We stayed on campsite 35 which was very far from any neighbors (we couldn’t see or hear anyone) and right next to the stream which basically makes it a magical unicorn of a campsite.
As a total camping newbie, I thought it would be helpful to share my review as I had trouble finding in-depth details about campgrounds and specific campsites when I searched. I also learned that some people have very different ideas about what “good” camping looks like. To me it’s proximity to neighbors (I prefer to not see anyone and am not a fan of being close to other campers), cleanliness of bathroom facilities and general vibe from other campers. Wheeler Gorge was a total “A” rating in my book and I’m eager to discover more spots like this. I was able to find such a great site by doing some serious internet digging and uncovered some great resources along the way.
Here are a few tips I learned when researching this trip.
Facebook Groups - Now hear me out on this one, I am not a Facebook person and I’m usually not much of a joiner when it comes to people I don’t know. However, I found an amazing LA camping FB group and it was extremely helpful. People tend to be very responsive and post detailed notes and pictures about places they’ve been. It was actually here that I found the recommendation of campsite 35. I also joined a FB group for owners of Meerkat trailers where I’ve learned a lot of great tips and founds campground recs across the entire country.
Campsite Photos - This is a great website with in-depth pictures and reviews by campsite. They also have a list of the best campsites within the park which is super helpful. I always do a double check of this website before I book anything since oftentimes picture on the national park websites are few and far between.
