Activities to Promote Language and Speech Development at Home
Hey moms and dads!
I hope you are all keeping well and enjoying the beginnings of our new normal!
Today, I have made a list of activities for you, that can be used to promote language and speech development at home.
These #ELYactivities can be used to work on nouns, verbs, adjectives, concepts, sounds, organizational skills, sequencing, problem solving and follow directions! Who knew?!
Here are some activities, based on developmental stages and ages!
0-18 months
Peek-a-boo
Mirror time (encourage copying of sounds using a mirror)
‘Ready, Steady, Go!’ games
Bubbles
Nursery rhymes
Reading books
Lego/ blocks
Water play
Make a treasure basket
18 months - 2 years
Play Dough
Make a puzzle
Bath-time play
Ball games
Play with farm sets
Drawing
Sponge painting
Paint shapes with water
Play with Mr. Potato Head (so great for labelling & following directions)
Go grocery shopping (pretend play)
Make up rhymes
2 - 5 years
Play “I Spy...”
Create a “prop-box” (collect different objects and toys, that your children can use for imaginative play)
Play dress-up
Go on a scavenger hunt around the house/garden
Go on a shape hunt
Play Kiddie charades
Sort toys by color or shape
Read a wordless picture book together (help your little one make up the narrative)
Show and tell (excellent for describing words, and vocabulary building)
Read labels at home
Makes snacks, or bake together
Plan a: Trip to the zoo, park, library, garden center, beach, pet shop or museum.
