Valentine's Day Gifting

Valentine's Day Gifting

It’s Valentine’s Day and after a quick breather, we are back to the concept of gifting once again! Though it can be a polarizing holiday (‘made up’ by greeting card companies, exclusionary to those not in a romantic union), I suggest the notion of Valentine’s gifting as a gesture of all kinds of love and appreciation, not just romantic and most definitely inclusive of oneself!

There are literally millions of potential clothing and accessory gifts to give. First, focus on the demonstration of thoughtfulness of the gift as opposed to the largesse suggested in the price tag. Second, drill down to what they would like or could use but would never get around to purchasing for themselves. It could be something as simple as a pair of patterned socks found at Nieman Marcus, Amazon and everywhere in-between. Why not pump up a daily necessity with a conversation starter that also puts a pep in the step and reminds them of the gift giver every time its worn? Replacing and/or upgrading everyday items like pajamas, work out gear or even socks can feel like two gifts in one because not only have you thought of them specifically, you’ve minimized their to-do list as well. Wherever possible, choose the special and quality iteration. (I will ceaselessly plug for 100% natural materials across all categories!)

If you’re going for the classic Valentine’s notion - jewelry - whether it’s high end or costume, take cues from what they already own or seem drawn to (gold vs. silver, rose vs. yellow, gemstones, etc). Like fragrance, jewelry is highly individual to the wearer, so as a gift giver it’s not time to take a swing for something conceptually ‘outside the box’ (no pun intended) unless you are not precious about a potential return or exchange. I encourage you to remember the idea is for the recipient to have what THEY want, so please do not take it personally if your choice is not exactly to their liking. It truly IS the thought that counts.

If you’re shopping high-end jewelry, look for the quality that should accompany the price tag. Search for a reputable jeweler and ask about return policies before buying. Estate pieces are some of my most favorite finds as they are so unique, and the craftsmanship is killer (see KFK and Olivia K). If costume, look for trendier designs like lots of small earrings for multiple piercings, stackable lightweight bracelets and necklaces of multiple lengths to wear together (see Becket + Quill). Look for what might compliment what is already on hand and won’t compete length wise. (There is no shade in snooping and measuring! As my mother always says, ‘Prior planning prevents poor performance.’)

If your recipient enjoys experiences as much as things, I suggest the one-two punch of a meal at a new or favorite spot where they can sport their gift from you. And if YOU are the recipient of your own gift? Make that reservation, too, and enjoy every moment!
