Simple Closet Organizing Tips From a Pro

Well, it’s that time again – just kidding!

There has NEVER been a season or year that has warranted the overexcitement I have for a closet refresh like the one I want for you all in Spring/Summer 2021.

Seriously though, it’s been a year and as we begin to emerge more and more from our respective cocoons into the outside world, the simple act of getting dressed can be an emotional (and sometimes physical!) stumbling block. Here are some quick organizational tips to help you begin to sort your personal closet space, whatever that looks like.

  • Put an empty grocery bag in your closet and every time you see an item that makes you say ‘meh’ or worse, put it in the bag. When the bag is full, donate, swap, sell. Repeat.

  • Visually prioritize what you want to wear NOW and in the next three months. Be like a grocery store – put your ‘best sellers’ aka favorite pieces front and center so you see them first and get the internal boost of seeing what pleases you most. There’s no point (and literal emotional harm called ‘decision fatigue’) in having off-season clothes in your eye line. Move these to the less accessible areas of your closet or to a separate closet or drawer altogether.

  • Group categories together. That way, when you go to dress for any occasion that arises, you know exactly where to look (and if you’ve been using tip number one, all the options in a category work for you physically and emotionally.)

  • Don’t forget about pajamas, undergarments, swim and exercise wear, jewelry, hats and all other accessories. Each category should live together and be distilled for seasonal appropriateness. Repeat with black tie or other infrequently worn sections.

These initial steps should get you started towards a closet that feels like your own personal boutique. If you have questions or want the full-service, post-pandemic closet refresh experience, reach out and I’ll be there (fully vaccinated!) to help you every step of the way.
