Authenticity, Now!
When working with clients I have always encouraged them to drill down into their current, authentic self and ask what they want to wear for their life NOW. Asking not just “what can I get rid of” but going a level deeper to ask if what you have in your closet is indicative of who you are on a deeper level. Does it reflect a previous iteration – one who worked in a corporate environment, one that had a different figure, one that reflects past trends or a different lifestyle? (I’m looking at you, clubbing clothes!) Does it speak to your current values? Does it serve you in your various facets, above all?
That was true before Covid-19 and in this new reality, I believe authenticity is even more valuable. During this distressing time, it’s gotten REALLY clear what we ‘need’. What clothing and accessories do you continue to gravitate towards? Do they make you feel like yourself? Are they ‘enough’ to support you mentally by boosting cheer or comfort? Do they actively energize you for all you need to muscle through as a parent, teacher, cook, employee, entrepreneur, gardener?
There is so much self-awareness to be gleaned in this strange period. While perhaps not urgent, narrowing down clothing options to what feels authentically you and supports your daily life in an uplifting and proactive manner - well, why not invest in that self-love? When we’re falling apart every few days, sartorially and otherwise, it seems like a wise decision to execute on this self-reflection. In less time than you think, you will see and feel noticeable benefits.
I challenge you to truly identify what is authentic to the life you’re living RIGHT NOW, what sends a positive message to you above all about who you are and what you’re capable of in this moment – and it is SO much, even if all you’re doing is treading water in these choppy-as-hell waves. Put those pieces front and center and put off worry about the future of dressing. Pandemic or not, your authentic self will inevitably evolve, and regularly attending to authenticity means you will have the skills to dress that person, too. Be honest and kind to yourself by honoring your authentic now. The rest can wait.
