Our Favorite Halloween Books for Kids

Toddler Halloween Books

We’re huge fans of Halloween over here, so obviously Halloween books are something we feel very passionately about. There are a ton of Halloween books out there for kids but many of them feel pretty subpar. Every year starting around September we check out tons and tons (and tons) of fall and Halloween themed books from the library and I can tell you from first hand experience that a lot of them leave something to be desired. So as a self-appointed expert on kid’s holiday-themed books, here is a list of our favorites that we own, love and read all the time.

The Best Halloween Books For Toddlers

Stumpkin - This book is absolutely stunning and tells the story of a little stemless pumpkin that wants nothing more than to become a jack o’ lantern and find a good window to live in.

How to Make Friends With a Ghost - This book is great for toddlers and older. It’s long, it’s silly and it tells you everything you need to know should you befriend a ghost. When my daughter was two we would just flip through and read a few pages but now that she’s three she loves to read through the whole book.

Spooky Pookie and EEK! Halloween - Sandra Boynton is amazing and her books never disappoint. The Pookie series are classics for a reason (seriously, Pookie is the cutest little animal) and EEK! Halloween is a perfect pick for younger kids to explore all the strange things happening on Halloween!

5 Minute Spooky Stories - This book might not make the cut when Instagraming your kid’s bookshelf, but it gives you a lot of bang for your buck. We’re huge fans of the 5-Minute Series because they are characters your kid already knows and loves, the books are very affordable and very long.

The Little Kitten - I’ve been slowly adding all of Nicola Killen’s books to our collection and this new one is just as beautiful as her previous books. Like her other popular titles (The Little Rabbit and The Little Reindeer) the story follows Ollie on her many adventures and features Nicola’s signature illustration style, cutouts and metallic accents. We bought this one a few weeks ago and it’s become an almost nightly read.

ET and Buffy The Vampire Slayer - We’re huge fans of all illustrator Kim Smith’s POP Classics book series (and they are our go-to gifts) but these two are hands down our favorites and perfect for spooky Halloween reading. My daughter loves this Buffy book so much she actually dressed up as Buffy for Halloween when she was two.

Little Blue Trucks Halloween - Another classic series, I love this one because it doesn’t feel like a holiday fluff book like so many other holiday-specials from established series often do. It sticks to the usual formula, is a normal length (have you noticed that many of the holiday books in popular series are a quarter the length of the others??) and they have flaps which is always a plus for little kids.

Room on the Broom - Another good board book pick for younger kids about a witch and her cat riding on the witch’s broom and then of course an adventure ensues.

Pick a Pumpkin - One of our absolute favorite Halloween books about the quest for finding (and carving) pumpkins. I love the illustrator’s style and also highly recommend Pick a Pine Tree.

Vlad The Rad - What’s not to love about a skateboarding vampire?! This one stays on our shelf year-round.

Happy reading!
