Making Time for Reading

If you’ve been following for very long, you’ve probably picked up on my love for reading. I’ve always enjoyed reading but in the last two years I’ve started settings goals for myself in terms of how many books I’d like to read. Partly as a personal challenge, partly because I found myself scrolling on my phone more than I’d like to and struggling with falling asleep.

Whenever I post about all the books I’m reading I always get a couple comments along the lines of “I wish I had time to read” or “you’re so lucky you have enough time to read”. But here’s the thing, I don’t have any more time than anyone else. We all lead very busy lives, especially with kids. It’s about how you choose to spend your time and what makes you happy. Some people love watching reality TV, some people love scrolling on their phone, I just love reading. You certainly don’t need to read, but if you’re wanting to do more of it, here are a few tips I have for you.

  1. Keep a book with you at all times. Think about how much time you spend waiting for school pickups, at the doctors office, waiting to meet friends, etc. I personally like to keep a book in my purse and I also tend to get through a few pages when I’m cooking dinner.

  2. Try reading every night before bed. It might even help you sleep better! If you read every night for even 15 minutes you’ll get through a book in no time!

  3. Find what format you enjoy the most. Maybe you’ll discover you love audiobooks and you can listen to them in the car or while you exercise.

But most of all just remember, it’s not a competition! Read if you want and don’t feel like you need to get through a certain number of books.

Happy reading!
